Beach Volleyball Tournament to be Held in Syntagma Square

The Athens Golden Cup tournament, which is part of the Beach Volley 2022 Championship that will later take place in the Greek cities of Thessaloniki, Xanthi, and Agios Nikolaos after the event in Athens, is supported by the Municipality of Athens and the Hellenic Volleyball Federation.

This is the first such major beach volleyball tournament to be held in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic two years ago.

The tournament in Syntagma Square will run from June 2nd to June 5th, and competitive male and female teams from across Greece and around the world will compete.

Afterwards, it will move to Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki from June 16th to June 19th, Xanthi Central Square in Xanthi from July 15th to June 17th, and to the Agios Nikolaos Marina in Agios Nikolaos from July 29th to 31th.

“After the pandemic, I’m looking forward to seeing beach volleyball players again, especially newer athletes. I hope that we have a wonderful season,” said Tie Santana, head coach of the National Beach Volleyball Team.

“I believe that we will have a strong circuit. There is also great interest from teams from abroad to take place in the competition,” the team manager, Manolis Roumeliotis, stated.

This is only the second time that such a major beach volleyball tournament will be held in Syntagma Square. The first tournament held in a public square took place in 2010.

Along with the matches themselves, a number of family-friendly sports and activities will be held in honor of the tournament.

Entry to the event for spectators will be free, and the purchase or reservation of a ticket is not necessary.

Syntagma (Constitution) Square has always been the central square of the city and was the gathering point for the cream of Athenian society in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The square is also the starting point for sightseeing in Athens, as most of the city’s landmarks are less than a mile away, including the Acropolis, Plaka, the Roman Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and others which are within walking distance.

Syntagma Square is the central square of Athens and the second largest in Greece after Spianada Square in Corfu and is included in the list of the one hundred largest squares in the world.

Since its construction, Syntagma Square has played an important role in the daily life of Athenians. It was a meeting place, a favorite place for a Sunday walk, as well as a place to gather for musical presentations.
