Pizza is a traditional Italian Dish that became popular worldwide because it fitted very well into the eating habit we refer to as "fast food". There are four reasons for this popularity :
- Pizzas are easy to prepare
- Pizzas are easy to eat (for instance while watching tv)
- Pizzas were introduced in America by Italian immigrants in the first half of the 20th century and corresponded to what we call now "fast food" which became familiar in the USA in the course of the 20th century
- In the second half of the 20th century American "fast food" became popular in the rest of the world and pizzas along with it.
The type of pizza that has become so popular worldwide, with the thick crust and lots of ingredients, is not Italian but American. It has spread everywhere in part through American restaurant chains, just like other types of fast food.
Pizza tastes good because it has richness from meats, fat and cheese, the appealing texture of a crispy crust, an acidic and slightly sweet sauce, and a host of savory toppings. If you throw on a bunch of mushrooms, it packs an awesome umami punch as well. Pizza smells great too
